As zonal DCP, Kumar's name is associated with the investigation into allegations against West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels in 2007 for his supposed connection with bookie Mukesh Kochar, having links with Dawood Ibrahim's syndicate, who was under scanner of ICC. The probe, led by Kumar under the then CP SPS Yadav, had led to ban on Samuels for couple of year from international cricket under the match-fixing charges. Kumar had briefed the ICC's special security team at police gymkhana and had handed over the crucial tapes of conversations between Samuels and Kochar.
Kumar was one of the three DCPs in city in 2006 who had to fight the Khairlanji protesters on road when the region was simmering in tension.

Amitesh Kumar, the Pune Police Commissioner graduated with a degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. Other than this, he completed a postgraduate degree in cyber law. In 1995, Amitesh Kumar cracked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He placed 59th on the All India Merit List after taking this exam. Amitesh Kumar was then designated as a Maharashtra cadre Inspector of Police.
After completing his IPS training and passing the UPSC exam Amitesh Kumar was sent to the Solapur district of Maharashtra. In 1997, he was appointed as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was thereafter appointed as Aurangabad Rural’s Superintendent of Police, or SP. He served as Amravati district’s SP for a while as well. After this, he was assigned to the position of Nagpur Deputy Commissioner. He moved to Mumbai after that and became the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
