2015 Iglesia ni Cristo leadership controversy
Dispute in the Philippines
A dispute between senior members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in the Philippines occurred in July 2015. It was reported that the INC had expelled some of its ministers, along with high-profile members Felix Nathaniel "Angel" Manalo and Cristina "Tenny" Villanueva Manalo, the brother and mother of current INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, respectively.
The INC administration released a statement claiming that Eduardo had agreed to the expulsion of his brother and mother from the INC, as decided upon by its overall leadership. However, both Angel and Tenny claimed their lives were threatened by the Iglesia administration. Angel and Tenny had reportedly been illegally detained at the Iglesia's Central Office Complex in Tandang Sora, Quezon City, and that at least ten ministers of the Church were missing and alleged to have been abducted.
Former INC ministers Roel Rosal and Isaias Samson, Jr., claimed that the Sanggunián (the highest administrative council of the INC) had unlawfully abducted and detained ministers, along with members of the Manalo family, to cover up corruption surrounding the chief auditor, Glicerio "Jun" Santos, Jr. On July 24, 2015, the INC, represented by Glicerio B. Santos IV, head counsel and son of Santos, Jr., filed a libel complaint against Samson. Detained INC Evangelical Worker Lowell Menorca stated that he was forcibly detained by the INC administration, and was kidnapped at gunpoint by police officers in the employ of INC leaders and was forced to deny his captivity under duress. Menorca later fled to Canada and filed for refugee status, which was granted in 2018, with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada stating: "When the panel considers the links between the INC and the law enforcement authorities in the Philippines, the general climate of impunity th Filipino Christian minister (1886–1963) For the film, see Felix Manalo (film). Manalo is believed by INC adherents to be the last prophet of God in the final days, sent to reestablish the church that Jesus founded, which they claimed to have fallen into apostasy following the deaths of the apostles. He served as the church's first Executive Minister until his death in 1963, and was succeeded by his son, Eraño Manalo. Born in a devout Catholic family, Manalo began questioning Catholic teachings during the Philippine Revolution in the 1890s, ultimately converting first as a Methodist in 19 Bro. Eraño de Guzman Manalo (January 2, 1925 – August 31, 2009, also known as Ka Erdy, was the Executive Minister of the Iglesia ni Cristo, serving from 1963 until2009. He took over the administration of the church after the death of his father, Bro. Felix Manalo, in 1963. He was instrumental in the propagation and expansion of the church internationally. He previously held office as the General Treasurer of the church, and as a District Minister of Manila. Bro. Eraño Manalo was the fifth child of Bro. Felix Y. Manalo and Bro.Honorata de Guzman. His name came from a reversal andelision of the term “New Era,” which his father used to describe what he felt was “a new Christian era” as the Iglesia ni Cristo was established. Bro. Eraño Manalo initially took up law school, but left his studies to become a minister of the INC. He started attending the church’s ministerial classes at the age of 16 and was ordained as a minister by the age of 22. He held various positions in the church including being the general treasurer of the INC and circulation manager of the Pasugo magazine (now known as God’s Message). During this time, he wrote a 64-page booklet entitled Christ-God: Investigated-False. On January 17, 1955, Bro. Eraño Manalo married Sis. Cristina Villanueva with whom he has six children (Bro.Eduardo, Bro. Felix Nathaniel, Bro.Marco, Sis. Lolita, Sis Erlinda and Sis. Liberty). In 1953, ten years before his father’s death, Bro. Eraño Manalo was elected successor to his father as Executive Minister. As of 2005 his son Bro. Eduardo is INC’s Deputy Executive Minister. With the passing of Bro. Felix Manalo, critics of the church predicted the decline and eventual fall of the Iglesia. To them, the church’s popularity was due mainly to the charisma and leadership of Bro. Felix Manalo. Barely a month after assuming his role as spiritual leader of the church, the young Manalo began visitin twitterfacebookemail Iglesia ni Cristo is a Christian religion founded by a Filipino Felix Y. Manalo in Manila and was registered with the Philippine government as a church on July 27, 1914. Eduardo V. Manalo, a grandson of the church’s founder, is its current executive minister. The church claims they are in over 100 countries all over the world. Locally, they have 2,251,941 members, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office. The INC wields political clout by practicing bloc voting during national and local elections. INC members are given a few days before election day a sample ballot with the names of candidates the Church leadership is endorsing. This could translate to 1.5 to 1.8 million votes in national elections which makes the church very powerful and influential. But not all the presidential candidates the INC endorsed won. In the 1986 snap presidential election, Corazon Aquino won over incumbent Ferdinand Marcos, who was supported by the INC. In 1992, Fidel V. Ramos, who won as president, did not get the endorsement of the INC who supported Marcos crony Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr.. Four of the presidential candidates the INC has endorsed eventually won. They are: Joseph Estrada in the 1988 elections, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the 2004 elections, Benigno Aquino III in the 2010 elections, and sitting president Rodrigo Duterte. It is widely alleged that the Church leadership recommends to the President INC members for positions in government especially in the judiciary, Commission on Elections commissioner, and Bureau of Customs. In 2015, a controversy broke out among the Iglesia ni Cristo when it was revealed that the Manalo clan was at odds over the church’s management of its finances which led to the church expelling Eduardo’s mother and his siblings Angelo, Marco Eraño, and Lolita. The controversy allegedly stemmed from the church’s construction of the P7.8-billion ($200 million) Philippin Felix Manalo
