  • Jake White’s Springboks record that Rassie Erasmus fell agonisingly close to beating

Rassie Erasmus came agonisingly close to equalling a Springboks record in 2024 which was set by Jake White and has stood for 17 years.

Following South Africa’s back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories, Erasmus has expressed the need to usher in the next generation of Springboks players and he certainly did that in 2024.

He issued 12 Test debuts in his first year back in charge and recalled several players who had been on the fringe of the squad throughout the last Rugby World Cup cycle.

This meant that Erasmus used a mind-boggling 50 players over 13 Test matches in 2024. Despite spreading his net and testing the depth of his player pool, South Africa still managed to win 11 of those 13 games with their two defeats coming by a single point.

Despite the mass rotation from Erasmus, he was unable to match or beat a record set back in 2007 by former head coach and fellow Rugby World Cup winner White.

That is ofcourse the record for the most players used by a Springboks head coach in a calendar year.

    Jake White’s Springboks record

While Erasmus used 50 players in 2024, his tally fell short of White’s in 2007 when the then-Springboks head coach caused controversy by resting 20 of his frontline players for the away leg of the Tri Nations.

White would 52 players in total that year with the likes of John Smit, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger, Bryan Habana, Percy Montgomery and several others missing the Tests in Australia and New Zealand as the head coach focused on winning the Rugby World Cup.

The now Bulls director of rugby also heavily rotated his team for the matches against Samoa, Namibia and the Test against Wales after winning the Rugby World Cup. Included White’s 52 players was Luke Watson who was controversially snubbed by the head coach only to be added to the squad by SA Rugby president Oregan Hoskins. Watson would earn his Test debut again

List of South Africa national rugby union players

South Africa national rugby union team players hold several international records. Several players from the South Africa national rugby union team have joined the IRB and International Hall of Fame.

    Individual records

    Career

South Africa's most capped player is Eben Etzebeth with 128 caps. Matfield was the most-capped lock for any nation in rugby history, with all of his 127 appearances at that position in 2011, this record has now been overtaken by Alun Wyn Jones. The most-capped back is Bryan Habana, with 124 caps over a thirteen year career.Percy Montgomery holds the South African record for Test points with 893, which at the time of his international retirement placed him sixth on the all-time list of Test point scorers (he now stands eleventh).

Morné Steyn holds the Springbok record for the fastest 100 points (8 Test matches)

Although statistics on the success rate of kicks at goal were not kept until the late 1980s, it is believed that Steyn also holds the record for most consecutive successful kicks at goal in Tests. He had a streak of 41 successful kicks at goal, which started during the Boks' Test against Italy on 19 June 2010 and ended on 6 November 2010 against Ireland.

John Smit was the world's most-capped captain, having captained South Africa in 82 of his 111 Tests. He has since been overtaken by Richie McCaw and Brian O'Driscoll. The world's most-capped lock pairing is that of Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha, who have started together in 62 Tests. Smit also played 46 consecutive matches for South Africa, which is a record.

The record try scorer is Bryan Habana with 67 international tries.
