Mahadevan (born 6 May 1961) is an Indian actor who has appeared in predominately Telugu and Tamil films. In Telugu, he is credited as Ramaraju. He is best known for his roles in Pithamagan (2003) and Uppena (2021).

Career

Mahadevan worked in many Telugu films under the stage name of Ramaraju before getting his breakthrough portraying the antagonist in the Tamil film Pithamagan (2003) by Bala. The film's name has subsequently been used as a prefix to his stage name to distinguish him from other artistes called Mahadevan. Regarding his performance in Muruga (2007), a critic wrote that "Pithamagan fame Mahadevan walks away with all honours. He lends solidity to the role". He reprised his role from Pithamagan (2003) in the Kannada remake Anatharu (2007).

Early life

Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chennai, India to a Tamil family. He learned Indian Classical Music and Carnatic music in his childhood and started playing Veena at the age of five.He went to OLPS High School in Chembur.He did his engineering in electronics from R.A.I.T (D Y Patil,Navi Mumbai). As of now he sings songs in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada,Telugu, Marathi, and Carnatic.

Career

Though a software engineer by profession and having worked for Oracle Corporation, Shankar's interest in music made him venture into the field of music. He got his first award as a playback singer in Chennai film music, collaborating with A. R. Rahman and winning a National Film Award for his song in Kandukondain Kandukondain. A prominent star in the Kodambakkam film industry, he later gained more recognition by releasing his first music album called Breathless. He later got into music direction and became a part of the Shankar Ehsaan Loy trio, composing music for Bollywood films.

He enjoys a successful run with Fusion-Jazz band SILK with Louis Banks on Keyboards, Sivamani on percussion, Sridhar Parthasarathy on Mridangam and Karl Peters on Bass Guitar.

Shankar Mahadevan has also provided vocals for several compositions of Remember Shakti which features maestros like Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, U. Srinivas and Selvaganesh Vinayakram.

He is also a mentor on Zee TV's musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009.

Introduction

Shankar Mahadevan is an award-winning musical composer, playback singer and part of the Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy composing trio team. He is also the founder of the Shankar Mahadevan Academy, which teaches Indian Music online to students worldwide. He can speak fluently in Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu, Hindi and English. Some of his popular songs include Urvashi Take It Easy from Humse Hai Muqabla (1995), I Love You from Auzaar (1997) and Kay Sera Sera from Pukar (2000).

Early Life

Born to a Tamil Iyer family from Pallakad Kerala, Shankar was brought up in Chembur, Mumbai. He started learning Carnatic music from childhood and could play the veena by the age of five. His first music teacher was the Marathi composer Srinivas Khale. In his formative years, he attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School (OLPS) in Chembur before moving on to completing his HSC SIES Sion and then graduating with Computer Science and Engineering from Ramarao Adik Institute of Technology in 1988. He then worked as a software engineer for Oracle.

Rise to fame

Shankar rose to fame with the release of the musical album entitled Breathless in 1998. The title track Breathless, minus any verse, stanza or break that lasts for almost three minutes, was engineered to appear as if he sung it in a single breath. The lyricist for the album was the renowned Javed Akhtar and the model appearing in the album was Renu Desai. He then ventured into music direction and became a member of the Shankar- Ehsaan- Loy trio, which provides music for Bollywood films.

Shankar got his first National Film Award in playback singing for his song Kandukondain Kandukondain in the year 2000 and went on to become an accomplished musician in Tamil Cinema.     Shankar Mahadevan (born 3 March 1967) is an Indian singer and composer who is part of the Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy trio that writes music for Indian films. In 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate (honoris causa degree) by Birmingham City University.

    Personal life and early career

    Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chembur, Mumbai into a Tamil family originally from Palakkad, Kerala. He learned Hindustani classical and Carnatic music as a child, and began playing the veena at the age of five under Shri Lalitha Venkataraman. Mahadevan studied music under Pandit Shrinivas Khale and T.R. Balamani.

    He is an alumnus of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School, Chembur and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai, affiliated to Mumbai University, and was a software engineer for the company, Leading Edge. After working for Leading Edge Systems (now Trigyn Technologies Limited), Mahadevan ventured into music.

    He has two sons, Siddharth Mahadevan and Shivam Mahadevan, both of whom are singers.

    Musical career

    Mahadevan got early fame as an indipop star with his fusion of Carnatic, Hindustani and Jazz. At that time, his non-film album, Breathless topped the Indian music charts in 1998.
