    Michael J. Pollard was 80 when he died on November 20, 2019 of cardiac arrest. He is survived by son Axel Emmett Pollard from his second marriage, and daughter Holly Howland from his first marriage to actress Beth Howland (1961-1969). 

    Nee Michael John Pollack Jr. when he was born on May 30th, 1939, Pollard enrolled at Actors Studio in New York and changed his name along the way to success.

    Michael J. Pollard began his film career on television in 1958, appearing in small parts on anthology series like Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

    Pollard played Maynard’s cousin, Jerome Krebs in 2 episodes of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis in 1959, acting with regulars Dwayne Hickman and Bob Denver (Maynard Krebs), and fellow guest-stars Tuesday Weld, Warren Beatty, and William Schallert.

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pollard also appeared on Broadway that year with Warren Beatty in Bye Bye Birdie (Dick Gautier was also in the cast). These interactions must have impressed Beatty enough to ensure Pollard was later cast in Bonnie and Clyde almost a decade later. In addition to Pollard, Faye Dunaway, and Beatty, the cast of Bonnie and Clyde includes Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons, Denver Pyle, and Gene Wilder.

    In a 1969 interview with Roger Ebert, Pollard confirmed that he couldn’t, in fact, drive a car in the movies OR in real life.

    There was this guy teaching me, but I couldn’t learn. So here I was stuck in the parking place, and Penn (the director) said, Okay, do it that way.”

    Personal life[]

    Michael John Pollack, Jr. was born and grew up in New Jersey, the son of Michael John Pollack who worked as a bartender and his wife Sonia. Pollard himself was married twice, first to actress Beth Howland, with whom he had one daughter Holly Howland, and a second marriage to Annie Tolstoy with whom Michael fathered a son Axel Emmett Pollard. Both of Pollard's marriages ended in divorce, the first in 1969 and the second in 1976. Pollard never remarried after the divorce of his second wife.

    By the mid-1970s, Pollard was suffering from severe drug and alcohol abuse. He received treatment in the 1980s and afterwards become heavily involved in support group treatments and sponsoring other recovering addicts and alcoholics. Rumors persisted into the 1990s that Pollard was still suffering from addiction, mainly due to odd behaviors during interviews, such as staring into space when speaking or rambling answers to questions.     Pollard was in acting since 1958. A character actor, he accumulated almost a hundred appearances in movies and television series since then. Most of his training was acquired through the Actor's Studio in New York City, where at one point he shared the stage with George C. Scott and attended acting classes with Marilyn Monroe.

    In 1967, Pollard earned an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role of C.W. Moss in the film Bonnie and Clyde.     Actor Michael J. Pollard has passed away from cardiac arrest at age 80. Pollard's unique look and acting style propelled him to fame in the 1960s. Pollard was born in New Jersey and crossed the river to study in the famed Actors Studio. He first appeared on Broadway in the smash hit production of "Bye Bye Birdie" and quickly became a familiar face on popular television programs including  "Gunsmoke", "Lost in Space", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Star Trek", "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Route 66", "I Spy", "The Fall Guy", "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.", "Crime Story", "Superboy" and "Tales from the Crypt". Pollard's trademark onscreen persona was as a lovable but dim-witted, slow moving character. The image paid off handsomely for him when was cast as C.W. Moss in director Arthur Penn's 1967 classic "Bonnie and Clyde".  In the key role, Pollard played a loyal accomplice to the infamous gangster couple. Pollard was nominated for numerous major awards for his performance including a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The success of "Bonnie and Clyde" briefly elevated Pollard to leading man status and he starred in numerous films including "Jigsaw", "Hannibal Brooks", "Little Fauss and Big Halsey" and "Dirty Little Billy" before reverting to supporting player status.
