Born March 16, 1985 – Sweden, Linder started playing the piano at the age of 4, while growing up, he listened to the songs his older sisters listened to, artists like Soundgarden, as he liked the band’s use of weird meters in their songs.

At age 12, a girl he liked said the bass was the “sexiest instrument in the world”, at age 13 Linder switched to bass.

His first childhood bass idol was Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, after hearing the song “Airplane” from the One Hot Minute album. In addition, Linder later discovered groups such as The Brecker Brothers and Tribal Tech, with Gary Willis on bass. Gary Willis would become one of his biggest influences. Linder also started taking lessons from a local Swedish bassist, Robert Sundin.

At the age of 16, Linder was already a busy studio musician in Stockholm and played with many different groups.

Linder attended the Royal College of Music, where he teamed up with vocalist and pianist Jonah Nilsson and drummer Aron Mellergårdh. Together, the three formed Dirty Loops in 2008. Since the group’s formation, Linder has appeared on the band’s debut album Loopified and toured with artists such as David Foster and Maroon 5.

Later, Linder, Mellergårdh and Nilsson began to reorganize and harmonize modern pop songs. In 2010, Dirty Loops uploaded their cover of Lady Gaga’s song “Just Dance,” which had over 100,000 YouTube views and 10,000 Facebook shares in the first two months of its release. As of 2014, her video has over 19 million views and counting.

The Swedish trio’s ability to put devastating chops all over unsuspecting pop tunes will impress even the most hardened gig-goers, and Linder’s slap-happy approach is a major influence on the contemporary bass scene. Their last album, 2021’s Turbo, was a collaboration with Wulfpeck guitarist Cory Wong, yielding a hit with their reinterpretation of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 6/8 time.

We caught up with Linder as Dirty Loops were making their anxiously awaited UK debut at the Radar Festival. Henrik was thrilled to be playing the UK but humble about his band’s status, picking Australian prog prodigy Plini as his personal festival highlight.

“These kind of gigs are what I want to do the most when making music, so it’s been absolutely amazing,” he grins.

In a wide-ranging interview, Linder talks about his gear, Dirty Loops’ creative process, and how to develop such monstrous technique.

Dirty Loops is a band from Stockholm, Sweden, made up of Jonah Nilsson (keyboards and lead vocals), Henrik Linder (bass and backing vocals) and Aron Mellergård (drums and backing vocals). Their arrangements borrow from jazz and jazz fusion, gospel, funk, electronica, pop, and disco. Jonah and Henrik were childhood friends and met Aron when all three of the band's members studied music at Södra Latin together.

After upper secondary school, they attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm together. Nilsson studied classical theory while Linder and Mellergårdh studied jazz. Jonah Nilsson has also studied music at Betel College in Stockholm. Henrik Linder attended Adolf Fredrik Music School as a child.

Henrik Linder began his music career as a pianist at the age of four and bass at the age of 13.

Jonah Nilsson also started singing as a child, and his parents sang in the choir of Katarina Church, Stockholm. At the age of 11 he began playing piano. He appeared as a backing singer and played piano on Danny Saucedo's tour in 2005, the same year that Danny made his debut on the TV show Swedish Idol.

History

The band was formed in 2008 and released their first song in 2010. In February 2011, they signed a management contract with producer and songwriter Andreas Carlsson. On September 3, 2011, the band backed Danny Saucedo at the Aftonbladet music gala, "Rockbjörnen".
