Respectfully known by the entire world as 'Mahatma Gandhi' is one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century. His preaching, his quotes, his knowledge and wisdom continues to influence world leaders nearly seventy years after his death. Influential men like Martin Luther King Jr. and in the more recent times, former US President Barack Obama, have admitted that their thinking has been heavily influenced by Gandhi’s ideas.



A Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, gave him the title 'Mahatma', which translates to 'great soul'. Not to forget, an entire country view him as 'Father of the Nation'. His contribution to modern India is immense, and words fail to capture its full extent.

He wanted to revolutionize India in so many ways and managed to lay many seeds for others. However, the struggle was not an organized effort, and much of the heavy lifting was done by the extremists using violence. Gandhi’s idea of India was something radically different.

After spending two decades in South Africa and leading the local community’s struggle for civil rights and discrimination there, he returned to India in He travelled through the length and breadth of the country, witnessed the sheer scale of poverty, and decided to do something about it. He began by working towards building more schools, improving the conditions of the hospitals, and the social upliftment of the people. Soon, his feats began to get the attention of the British rulers, who promptly put him in jail. This is when Gandhi put his philosophy to the test.

    Language in India Gender equality and gender equity are among the major concerns of the world today. This can be seen on the UN agenda in different fields of life. Goal-5 of the international declaration of World Education Forum, Dakar Framework for Action , is a pledge to achieve gender equality in education by (UNESCO, ). Pakistan also signed to follow the recommendations of Dakar Framework for Action

    This concern about gender equality has also been reiterated in the Pakistan Education Sectors Reforms Reforms (Govt. of Pakistan, ) and National Plan of Action concerning Education for All [EFA] [EFA] (Govt. of Pakistan, ). But the current practices in education sector in Pakistan do not speak for it.

    In Pakistan, the issue of gender representation in textbooks has not been given much attention in the past. Yet, a few studies conducted in Pakistan in this area have found disparities between the portrayal of male and female in the curriculum (Jafri, ;Mirza, ;Mirza & Rana"a, ;Zeenatunnisa, ).

    On the whole, the research on language and gender is scanty in Pakistan, and hence the present situation demands for further research in this area. In other parts of the world, through the linguistic analyses of textbooks, researchers have found gender bias at different levels. At the word level, particular adjectives like beautiful, pretty and tall are often associated with women while words like poor, rich, strong, and young for men (Carroll & Kowitz, ;Glass, ). Lesikin () states that at the sentence level, males are mostly placed in the position of communicative prominence and in the participants" roles males are often presented to have greater social prominence and power. Poulou () reveals that at the dialogue level, females produce fewer utterances and words.
