It’s weird how the inexorable march of time does things. For example and I bring this up for no particular reason, I like some of John Mayer’s music. I mean the old stuff, like pre-2004 exclusively, excepting Walt Grace for obvious reasons. Room For Squares is one of those Albums I Heard In College. You know the ones I mean, they’re with you forever, you never grow out of them, they never get old. Read more →Sarah Shook & the Disarmers

Look, I’m not gonna say it. Stop looking at me like that. I am not going to say it. I’ve been a tired old man since before the kids who decided it was a meme word were born so I cannot say it. There are hip gen z youthes on any social network who will probably be willing to take a short break from dunking on olds like me and say the meme word at you, this is serious business here. It’s an actual tragedy that I’ve never written up Feist. It’s Feist. She is unquestionbly among the canonized saints of this site, a brilliant and peerless voice that is at once among the most unique and yet informs so many. As with some of my other very favorites there are elements of Feist that feel so wholly incorporated into the intrinsic fabric of my taste that she’s a kind of blind spot by virtue of brilliance. Time for some culture, philistines. A while ago I accidentally stumbled into the fiddle stylings of virtuoso musician Janine Jansen. To this day she remains one of at most two players my aging and addled mind can call forth at whim for a strings fix (Alisa Weilerstein is the other, cellohmyyyy friends, her Kodály from Solo is unreal). Even with that being the case, I&rsquoPlaylist: What is Chvrches listening to?
On deceptively hopeful third album Love is Dead, out Friday, Chvrches throws an apocalyptic dance party. Teaming with super-producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Sia), the Scottish trio takes their sound to new heights of pop euphoria even as they ring the death knell for romance and civility in politics.
To mark the release, bandmates Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook shared a playlist of current favorites with USA TODAY.
SGL, Now Now
This track is on their new album that just came out and I really love it. Cacie Dalager's voice is beautiful and her lyrics break my heart. – Mayberry
Cold War, Cautious Clay
Need a break?Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
I heard this track when I was randomly scrolling through Spotify, and was grabbed by his voice and the production right away. – Doherty
This is America, Childish Gambino
It feels like this is Donald Glover's time. The man seems to be a creative dynamo right now. The power of this song and the video with its juxtaposition of modern African dance with sudden, shocking violence feels so brave and honest and just what needs to be said at this time. – Cook
No Tears Left To Cry, Ariana Grande
We saw Ariana live last year and her vocals are just insane. I really admire how outspoken she is, too — something that a lot of pop stars on her level would be afraid to do. – Mayberry
Pynk, Janelle Monae (feat. Grimes)
Janelle is such a unique voice in music, and I love that she is always challenging herself and pushing boundaries. I was excited about (new album) Dirty Computer for a long time and it didn't disappoint. – Mayberry
Falling Into Me, Let’s Eat Grandma
This is a band I came across about two years ago. They're childhood friends who have an amazing dynamic as musicians. Their album is coming out soon, too, I think. – Doherty
Not My Baby, Alvvays
We all love Alvvays and we were lucky enough to play On the verge of local stardom with his Soundset appearances and his attention-grabbing "Free on the 15th" download series, this south Minneapolis rapper holed up with his go-to producer/beatmaker, the Sundance Kid, and opened up about his troubled youth and grand musical ambitions. There's a broad sonic palette, ranging from Daft Punk-y dance beats in "Hands High" to bass-booming grime in "Shine" to sunny, soulful R&B on "Good One." Next gig: July 13 at Northrop Music series, U of M campus. A rapper has to be bold in this day and age, and the fiery and opinionated young Minneapolis MC (alternately known as Metasota) pulled off one heck of a stunt last month, dropping a song per day online for 30 days straight with help from a deep bullpen of producers. Incredibly, his father died in the middle of the project, but Meta kept going, adding a deep personal tone to the project. The songs, which range from political ragers to party-starting ravers, are available for free at his Soundcloud Web page. Next gig: Friday at the Cabooze. More is less on Benson Ramsey's and David Huckfelt's shimmering fourth album. The Iowa-bred songwriting duo expanded their ambient Americana band into a seven-man team -- Halloween, Alaska guitarist Jacob Hanson was the latest to join -- yet somehow they sound subtler and more low-key. There's a haunting quality to songs such as "All the While" and "Rise Up and Be Lonely" that immediately sucks you in, and then the pair's ascendant lyrics take their bittersweet time sinking in. Next gig: Aug. 11 at Square Lake Music Fest in Stillwater. After nearly a decade of barnstorming, bluegrassy string picking, it's darn near shocking .Best local albums of the year (so far)
