Indian–born Irish businessman (born 1957)

Noel Naval Tata (born 1957) is an Indian-born Irish businessman. He is the chairman of the Tata Trusts, Trent and Tata Investment Corporation, the managing director of Tata International, and the vice chairman of Titan Company and Tata Steel.

On 11 October 2024, following the death of his half-brother Ratan Tata, Noel Tata was appointed as a chairman of the Tata Trusts that holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons, the parent company of the Tata Group that holds the bulk of shares of the Group.

Early life

Part of the Tata family, he is the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata. He is the half-brother of Ratan Tata, the ex-chairman of the Tata Group, and Jimmy Tata.

Tata earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Sussex, and attended the International Executive Programme at INSEAD business school in France.

Career

He began his career at Tata International, the Tata Group's arm for products and services offered abroad. In June 1999, he became the managing director of the Group's retail arm Trent, which was founded by his mother. By this time, Trent had acquired the department store Littlewoods International and changed its name to Westside. Tata developed Westside, turning it into a profitable venture. In 2003, he was appointed the director of Titan Industries and of Voltas.

In 2010, it was announced that Tata was to become managing director of Tata International, the company dealing with the overseas business of the $70 billion conglomerate, raising speculation that he was being groomed to succeed Ratan Tata as head of the Tata Group. However, in 2011, his brother-in-law Cyrus Mistry was announced as Ratan Tata's successor . Ratan Tata’s father, Naval Tata was born into a Parsi family in Surat, Gujarat in 1904. He was the second of three sons. His father, Nusserwanji Tata, was a businessman who had built a successful cotton trading company. His mother, Hirabai was a homemaker and a social worker. Naval was educated at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay, and at the age of 16, he was sent to England to study at the prestigious Woolwich Polytechnic. 

After completing his studies, Naval Tata returned to India and joined the family business. He married Soonoo Commissariat in 1929, and the couple had two sons, Ratan and Noel. Naval Tata was a successful businessman and in 1938, he was appointed chairman of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest and most respected conglomerates. 

Under Naval Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group flourished. He was a visionary leader, and under his guidance, the Tata Group diversified into new businesses and became a major force in the Indian economy. He was also a philanthropist, and he set up the Tata Trusts, which provide financial assistance for education and health care. Ratan Tata is proud of his father’s achievements, and he has said that he is his biggest inspiration. Naval Tata was a great man, and he has left a lasting legacy.

Naval Tata was born on August 25 1904 and his father, Ratanji Tata was a prominent businessman and philanthropist. Naval Tata was educated at the Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai, and at the Campion School, Mumbai. He then went to the United States, where he studied at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, graduating with a degree in architecture in 1926.

Neil Alden Armstrong (August 5, 1930 – August 25, 2012) was an American astronaut and aeronautical engineer who, in 1969, became the first person to walk on the Moon. He was also a naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor.

Armstrong was born and raised in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He entered Purdue University, studying aeronautical engineering, with the U.S. Navy paying his tuition under the Holloway Plan. He became a midshipman in 1949 and a naval aviator the following year. He saw action in the Korean War, flying the Grumman F9F Panther from the aircraft carrierUSS Essex. After the war, he completed his bachelor's degree at Purdue and became a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was the project pilot on Century Series fighters and flew the North American X-15 seven times. He was also a participant in the U.S. Air Force's Man in Space Soonest and X-20 Dyna-Soarhuman spaceflight programs.

Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in the second group, which was selected in 1962. He made his first spaceflight as command pilot of Gemini 8 in March 1966, becoming NASA's first civilian astronaut to fly in space. During this mission with pilot David Scott, he performed the first docking of two spacecraft; the mission was aborted after Armstrong used some of his re-entry control fuel to stabilize a dangerous roll caused by a stuck thruster. During training for Armstrong's second and last spaceflight as commander of Apollo 11, he had to eject from the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle moments before a crash.
