Not me, as no gloves were required to touch or have your picture taken with Jimmy. Goodbye, Lord Stanley … and hello, Jimmy Kimmel. He would become a valued network colleague, and remains a dear friend to this day.

Don Barris is a comedian who has “warmed up” the studio audience from day one. Jimmy and Don’s relationship dates back to their work together on the made-for-TV reality film Windy City Heat in 2003. American late-night talk show

Jimmy Kimmel Live!, sometimes shortened to JKL, is an American late-night talk show, created and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and broadcast on ABC. The nightly hour-long show tapes and is based out of the Hollywood Masonic Temple in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It debuted on January 26, 2003 as part of ABC's lead-out programming for Super Bowl XXXVII. For its first ten years, Jimmy Kimmel Live! aired at either the midnight or 12:05 a.m. ET/PT before moving to 11:35 p.m. on January 8, 2013. Despite its name, the show has not regularly aired live since April 23, 2004, when censors were unable to properly bleep censor a barrage of swearing from actor Thomas Jane.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is produced by Kimmelot in association with 20th Television. It holds the title as the longest running late-night talk show on the network, having aired for more than three times as long as either The Dick Cavett Show (1969–1975) or Politically Incorrect (1997–2002).

    History

After Politically Incorrect was cancelled in 2002, ABC decided to create a talk show following Nightline. Kimmel, who had co-hosted Comedy Central sketch comedy show The Man Show was in negotiations as host in May 2002 and was publicly announced in November. The show premiered on January 26, 2003. Because Nightline traditionally began at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT, Jimmy Kimmel Live! (and Politically Incorrect before it) originally started after midnight.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is ABC's first attempt at a traditional late-night talk show since its attempt to revive The Dick Cavett Show in the 1980s. ABC had earlier attempted to directly compete with NBC's Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1960s and 1970s with The Les Crane Show, which was more of a serious interview program than light entertainment, The Joey Bishop Show (1967–1969), featuring Rat Pack member

For two decades, Carson reigned during the week as the king of late night, with virtually no competition. But he began to worry that NBC was missing an opportunity for an even later show.

And so a decision was made to create a post-Tonight Show, to be hosted by a socially awkward - or perhaps just misanthropic - former weatherman from Indiana.

    His name? David Letterman.

Late Night With David Letterman, which aired at 12.30am after The Tonight Show, lasted until just after Carson's retirement in 1992. And then all hell broke loose.

Letterman had expected to get Carson's job, but instead it went to a big-chinned comic named Jay Leno. (Adding to the insult, Leno had often been a junior guest on Letterman's show.) Amid the fury, NBC's rival, CBS, saw an opportunity: it poached Letterman and gave him a competing show at exactly the same time as Leno's, with the deliberately confusing title Late Show With David Letterman. NBC responded by hiring Conan O'Brien to take Letterman's place at Late Night, which prompted CBS to create the The Late Late Show to go up against it.

Confused? Not the viewers. They couldn't get enough.

So now two of America's big three networks were fully invested in the late-night television genre. Which meant that it was only a matter of time before the third, ABC, joined the battle.

When Kimmel was growing up in Brooklyn and later Las Vegas as the eldest of three siblings - his father, James, worked as an executive at IBM - he gave little thought to a career in television. "I really wanted to be an artist," he says. "I'm good at drawing. I play the clarinet, too. But badly."

Still, he was fixated by Letterman. "It was the first time I'd seen abstract humour," he recalls. "I remember specifically there was a prop that was a giant door knob, and I don't know what the joke was but he kept saying, 'It's just plain big',
