I did not wear this dress to ring in the New Year, but it does reflect the sparkly mood I was in when the clock struck twelve. On New Year’s Eve I lived the dream and watched the ball drop, and the year turn, in my cozy house while snuggling up with my little family. To me there is nothing better. The older I get and the crazier the world becomes, the more deeply grateful I am for the roof over my head, my delicious and delightful family and good health all around. When I was twenty I wished for different things. Big swings, endless glamour, invites to all the “right” parties. Today the “right” party is the one where I’m surrounded by people I love. I find glamour in smaller objets, and my big swings look more like nuanced shifts. And I love it. Gather ye rosebuds indeed, but also take time to stop and smell them. This new year brings with it many challenges, because, well, I’m alive, which is totally great! It also bring with it the promise of renewal. My dreams for this coming year aren’t huge, except maybe that return-home trip to Tanzania I’m planning. Aside from long distance travel, I dream of peace and happiness, for continued good health and an abundance of joy. Maybe that is a tall order after all. Well, nothing much is gained by dreaming small. So here’s to a year filled with big swings, glamour and nuance, and many invites to all the “right” parties.
With love,
Amanda

Today I’ve got my big girl pants on. Lately it seems I’ve needed them more often. The state of the world isn’t getting any less challenging, and I’m marching alongside my fellow humans to do what I can to make a positive impact. I won’t get into politics, but suffice it to say the political climate in our country and abroad forces positive action. I’m not doing anything drastic or dramatic, these pants weren’t made for lying in front of tanks after all, but in my own small way I’m lending my voice and leaning in. I call Senators with some regularity, I sign petitions nearly daily and sometimes, when I’m lucky, I even get my hands a little dirty. Like on a recent school day when my daughter and her classmates and I, alongside a few game teachers and parents, visited an underserved school in Los Angeles to help beautify their campus. We planted gardens and painted rainbow stripes along their track and field run. It was hard work, it really took it out of me, and I haven’t felt so good at the end of a day in a long while. The moral here? Put on your big girl pants and lend a hand and your voice wherever you can in support of whatever cause is meaningful to you. It’s good for you, and good for the world.
With love,
Amanda

Rachel Zawadi Luttrell (born 19 January 1971) is a Tanzanian-born Canadian actress best known for her role as Teyla Emmagan in Stargate Atlantis (2004–2009).
Early life
Luttrell was born 19 January 1971, in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, the daughter of Veronica Makihio Shenkunde Luttrell of the Washambala tribe of the Usambara Mountains, and Dr. William Leon Luttrell from Bossier City, Louisiana. She is one of four daughters. Her family emigrated to Canada when she was five years old, and she was raised in Toronto. Her family has several musical roots; her father, a former member of the critically acclaimed Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, trained Luttrell's soprano voice. She studied ballet at the Russian Academy of Classical Ballet School and also studied piano at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Career
Luttrell made her professional debuts in Canada's premier production of Miss Saigon in Toronto, and as "The Enchantress" in the Canadian production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. She would go on to appear in many other stage productions, such as Once On This Island, Goblin Market, and the premier performance of Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Lynn Nottage's Las Meninas.
Following a move to Los Angeles, Luttrell became frustrated with some of the minor roles she was offered to her at the time, and considered giving up on her acting career to enroll at the UCLA to study architecture.[5]
