Alexander hamilton childrens biography walt

Why this book: I was so impressed with Chernow&#;s biography of U.S. Grant that I wanted to learn as much about Hamilton, of whom I knew little, in the same voice. It was a good call.  Since I was already &#;reading&#; a couple of other books, I chose to listen to the audible version of AlexanderHamilton.  I have the written version as well, but the audible worked well for me &#; it is well read and was enjoyable tolisten to.

Summary in 3 Sentences:  Alexander Hamilton is a well researched and beautifully written chronological biography of Alexander Hamilton, from his childhood,  to his coming to America, his role in the revolutionary war and then his rise to become one of the pre-eminent men in the early days of our republic.  It is not a short book at pages, but it flows well, is easy to read, and is well worth the time to learn not only about this remarkable man, but also, thru the lens of his life, about the early days of our country.  Chernow quotes someone as saying that while Washington was the father of our country, and Madison the father of our constitution, Hamilton was the father of our form of government.

My Impressions: Another &#;Wow!&#; biography by Ron Chernow.  I listened to his biography Grant just last month and was so impressed with the way  Chernow told the story,  I decided right away to listen to him tell the story of Alexander Hamilton, about whom I knew little &#; only that he was an important &#;player&#; in the early days of our country, is considered one of our &#;founding fathers,&#; and that Aaron Burr killed him in a duel.  In this book Hamilton&#;s life is a fascinating lens through which to look at the early years of our country, from the s until the early s.

After listening to Chernow tell his amazing story, I&#;m not only much better informed about the stormy beginnings of our country and form of government, but I also have a much better appreciation for the characters of not only Hamilton, but also of ot

    Prominent American political family

The Hamiltons of the United States are a family of Scottish origin, whose most prominent member was Alexander Hamilton (/57–), one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Their ancestors and relations in Scotland included the Lairds of Kerelaw Castle in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, of the Cambuskeith branch of Clan Hamilton.

    Background

The paternal lineage of American founding father Alexander Hamilton was rooted in Scotland, where his relations were landed gentry known as the Hamiltons of Grange.

The Hamiltons of Grange descended from Walter de Hamilton, founder of the Cambuskeith branch of Clan Hamilton, who held lands in Edinburgh by a charter from Robert III of Scotland given between and The last Laird of the Hamiltons of Grange, who held the title from until his death in , was Alexander Hamilton's first cousin, also named Alexander.

James Alexander Hamilton was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in He was the fourth son of Laird Alexander Hamilton of Grange. His mother, Elizabeth Pollock, was the eldest daughter of Sir Robert Pollock, 1st Baronet of Pollock. With little prospect of an inheritance in Scotland, James moved to the West Indies to become a merchant and businessman on the island of Saint Kitts. He and Rachel Faucette (who was of English and French descent), became the parents, out of wedlock, of Alexander Hamilton and his older brother James Hamilton Jr.

Alexander Hamilton moved in October to the Thirteen Colonies (later the United States) to earn an education. He later became the aide-de-camp to General George Washington and first Secretary of the Treasury. He married Elizabeth Schuyler, who was the daughter of Philip Schuyler and Catherine Van Rensselaer, both members of prominent Dutch-American families, the Schuyler and Van Rensselaer families. Elizabeth and Alexander Hamilton were married on December
