Johnny Depp’s love life has become headline news during his libel trial against The Sun’s publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN).

NGN’s defence relies on 14 allegations of domestic violence from Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard, while two of his exes, Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, gave witness statements in support of the actor.

However, with all the high profile names in the case, many may have forgotten that Depp, 57, was actually married before.

Before Depp landed his first film role in A Nightmare On Elm Street in 1984, he was already a married man.

Lori Anne Allison was the sister of the bassist in a band Depp played in, and on 20 December 1983, they tied the knot in South Florida, when Depp was just 20 years old and Lori was 25. 

The young couple worked hard to make ends meet – Lori was a make-up artist, while her husband worked odd jobs, including as a telemarketer for a pen company.

And as Johnny’s band The Kids took off, they decided to move to Los Angeles, with Depp saying: ‘We figured we were great in Florida, we’d be even better in California.’

But it turns out that Lori was the key to Depp’s glittering Hollywood career.

Lori introduced her husband to Nicolas Cage, who had just starred in Fast Times At Ridgemont High and landed his first leading role in 1983’s Valley Girl. 

The actors became drinking buddies and Cage managed to get the budding star an audition in an upcoming horror film, A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Depp told Playboy: ‘I got the job. I was stupefied. They paid me all that money for a week. It was luck, an accident. I did it purely to pay the rent. I was literally filling out job applications at the same time, any kind of job.

‘Nic Cage said, “You should try being an actor. Maybe you are one and don’t know it.” I began acting, and I thought, well, this is an interesting road; maybe I should keep traveling on it.

Lori Allison was born in Toronto, Ontario to Bill and Margot Allison who immigrated to Canada from Scotland. Lori loved science in school and received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto. She then did postdoctoral research in Paris, France and at Rutgers University that helped pioneer putting foreign genes into plant cells. She came to Nebraska in 1996 to take a faculty position in the UNL Biochemistry Department, where she met her husband, John Markwell. After a half dozen years of teaching and research, she decided to change careers and pursued a Pharm.D. degree from Creighton University and became a pharmacist at CHI St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Lori loved cats and was thought of affectionately as a Cat Lady by many that knew her. She loved Sammy from 2000 to 2015 and then doted on Allison, a three-legged rescue cat from 2016 until her passing. Her cats were a major part of her life and shared every year with friends and family on her Christmas cards. She enjoyed knitting and made beautiful, unique gifts for her family members and friends. Wearing red and being an avid Cornhusker fan was a passion of Lori’s, as was visiting National Parks. She was a loving aunt and spoiled her nieces and nephews with candy and fun presents at birthdays and holidays and was a fun and influential part of life for John’s children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking with her husband and trying new foods.

Lori is survived by her husband John Markwell and his kids (Tristan and Caitlin), her parents (Bill and Margot), three brothers (Robert, Peter and David), two sisters in law (Patrice and Robin), four nephews (Cameron, Connor, Graham and Thomas) and two nieces (Lauren and Grace).
